Jack Marshall was installed manager of the Blue and Whites towards the start of 1960 – 1961 season. Blackburn came on the back off a tremendous season in the FA Cup reaching the FA Cup final the previous season. Rovers could not repeat the success the previous year witnessed as they could only manage a decent fifth round finish in the FA cup. Their league campaign was a struggle as they finished the season off in 18th position. Marshall guided the Blue and Whites to a slight improvement the next season, a 16th place finish was by no means a disaster. They had a great run in the FA Cup, narrowly missing out on progression as they stumbled out of the competition in the quarter finals. The 1962-63 season saw a huge improvement in their league form as they finished the season off in a respectable mid table finish off 11th place. They could only manage to reach the FA Cup third round, their poorest FA Cup finish in seven years.
David Whelan and Mike England were in inspirational form for the Blue and Whites during the 1963-64 season as Jack Marshall’s Blackburn men embarked on a terrific season in the top flight, a seventh position finish was their finest campaign in the top flight for 34 years, since the great Blackburn team of 1930. Marshall also guided the club to the last sixteen of the FA Cup, narrowly crashing out of the competition. The 1964-65 campaign was another fine one for Rovers as they reached the top half of the table, ending the season off in 10th place. They were unsuccessful however in the FA Cup, crashing out of the tournament in the first hurdle, exiting out in the third round.
