After successful campaigns the previous three seasons, Blackburn found themselves in a relegation dog fight during the 1990-91 season, escaping relegation to the third division, finishing the season off in 19th position. In a season what proved to be Don Mackay’s last at the club, Blackburn reached the third round of the FA Cup, losing a replay against Liverpool after putting on a great show against the league champions in the first match.
The 1991-92 season saw the former Liverpool manager, Kenny Dalglish, appointed in charge at Blackburn. The appointment proved to be a great one of the club as Rovers finished the season off in sixth place, in turn earning the side a place in the play offs. They won the play off final, which earned the club a place in the top flight for the first time in 25 years. They also reached the forth round of the FA Cup, however they suffered defeat against Notts County, losing the tie 2-1. The 1992-93 season was the start of what was Blackburn’s finest era in their recent football history. Dalglish signed Alan Shearer at the start of the season for what proved to be a bargain of £3 million. He scored a hat trick on his debut and finished the season off as top goal scorer in the premiership. Blackburn was in outstanding form through out the season and finished it off strongly in an impressive 4th position, establishing themselves as a serious premiership club. They were outstanding in the cup competitions, reaching the quarter finals of the FA Cup, unlucky to go out after holding Sheffield United level after extra time losing on penalties. They also had a great run in the league cup, reaching the semi finals, losing to the other Sheffield club, Sheffield Wednesday. The 1993-94 season was an incredible one for Blackburn, they purchased Kevin Gallacher at the start of the season and most importantly they broke the British transfer record fee, signing Chris Sutton from Norwich for £5 million. The Shearer and Sutton partnership worked a treat during the 1993-94 season and Rovers finished it off in second place, a major position f rot eh club. Blackburn boasted a great team at the time, including Alan Shearer, Stuart Ripley, Chris Sutton, Henning Berg, Tim Flowers and Graeme Le Saux.
