The 2002-03 season was a mighty success for Blackburn as they reached new heights of a sixth position finish in the top flight. The Blue and Whites also found themselves taking part in the UEFA Cup as they won the Worthington cup the previous season. They crashed out of the UEFA Cup in the second round, losing against Scottish club, Celtic. They also enjoyed a great run in the league cup, reaching the semi finals, losing out against Manchester united over two legs. Brad Friedel and Damien Duff were outstanding through out the campaign.
The 2003-04 season saw a gradual decline in Rovers fortunes as they finished the season off in 15th position. Damien Duff left the club in the summer for £17 million; however Blackburn strengthened their side, signing Steve Reid and Barry Ferguson at the start. They crashed out of the league cup in the third round, losing a thrilling encounter against Liverpool by 4-3. They crashed out of the UEFA Cup in the first round losing against Genclerbirlig. The 2004-05 season saw the departure of Barry Ferguson, only 18 months since joining the club. Blackburn was under the guidance of former Welsh national manager, Mark Hughes and they struggled in the top flight, however they comfortably avoided the relegation battle with a 15th place finish. The highlight of the 2004-05 season was reaching the FA Cup semi finals, crashing out of the competition losing against Arsenal, the eventual winners.
The 2005-06 season saw a huge improvement in Blackburn’s league performances as they finished the season off in a very strong sixth position, in turn earning themselves a place in Europe. Robbie Savage and Andy Todd were outstanding for the club and they also reached the semi finals of the Carling Cup, losing against Manchester United in the crucial encounter.
